Our story (well, a wee bit anyway)
Tony and Moana welcome you to the Curly Tree Whitebait Company nestled on the historic Waita River (about 10kms north of Haast & 120km south of the Glaciers)
We are a young business to the West Coast of the South Island, although the Kerr family is not new to the Waita River.
The premises of Curly Tree are situated on an old airstrip, used since the early 1900's for airlifting whitebait out (and vital supplies in - often brown and fizzy) from the Waita.
In the mid 1960's, Tony's Great-Grandparents established one of the early huts on the river and began a whitebaiting tradition that now extends five generations.
Our whitebait is sourced from a select few of the cleanest whitebait producing rivers on the South Westland coast. These rivers have had little or no human impact, and still produce yields on par with when Tony's great-grandparents were fishing them.
Our focus is simple - to provide you the best West Coast white gold - Curly Tree Whitebait is New Zealand Food Safety Authority approved and is proud to cater to the needs of supermarkets, major distributors, restaurants, hotels and individuals alike.
Curly Tree continues to operate it's retail shop at the Waita River. Call in to buy the well sought after West Coast whitebait for your own freezer, or try NZs' iconic whitebait pattie cooked for you on the spot!
Just follow the signs and call in for a chat and your own taste of this great Kiwi delicacy...the famous whitebait pattie!
